To note, the magazine issues
gave two options on what specific topic I had to use: a summer and winter
collection or a special issue (Halloween, Christmas, etc). I chose the summer
and winter issue for my magazine.
My aim for the coursework is
to appeal towards a target audience of 16-21 year old demographic, as it was the basic
needs for consumerism within a young adult demographic. The aim is to have the
specific topic appeal more towards the target audience, gaining their interest.
This then links up with the
genre that I had chosen for my magazine: a mature, modest fashion ware towards
Muslim women. Hen doing my research, I noticed
how only one prominent Muslim modal was present for my analysis: Halima Aden,
an American Somali women who is known for breaking off stereotypes by being
featured in a variety of chic and elegant magazines that depicts her different
fashion ware, whilst still donning the hijab. Using her as an inspiration, I
analysed the types of outfits she’d wear, as well as key elements that are
represented on her clothes. For example, in her Allure issue, she is shown
prominently wearing red, blue and white colours, being a symbolism of the
American flag (a way of her embracing her identity as Muslim Somali American
women).
The way I incorporated my
genre was through the ideas based around two features: the way the models are
wearing the specific clothes and poses and the layout of the double page spread
of the magazine. To note, the summer genre is focused on the Muslim fashion
ware within the urban summer atmosphere, an idea of how Muslim women can dress
appropriately within a hot weather in a modern society. The winter addition had
a varsity of unique clothing ideas that can be worn and adorned (winter time
being a time of people layering their clothes). In one example, I used the Elle
magazine of Halima Aden to annotate how she used layering of clothes, as well
as the specific colour scheme she kept present to match well with. For the
spread out, I used a copy of allure magazine to annotate how the modal is
composed, the article layout itself, etc.
When it comes to regulation,
it’s important to understand the issues that surround it. New laws are
introduced every year that effect introduced businesses. It’s therefore
important that the components within the magazines (as well as the one being
made) are either credited or include original content. Failing to do so would
cause legal issues.
In order to keep the ranged
target audience, I had to make sure that the magazine used for an inspiration
had the content that would satisfy them. Since the demographic were that of
young adults, I would have to make sure that the types of fashion used would be
ones that aimed for a mature but stylish tone, which would therefore gain an
interest towards the target audience. The colour scheme should also be kept at
a limit, using some that would gain more appeal. For example, neon colours
wouldn’t be used, as they appealed more towards the younger demographic.
During the production, I was
able to creatively design a mood board, needed as a basis for my magazine
design. Specific colours and designs easily matched with my main aim. If future
improvement were needed, it is to analyse moreover of the specific double page
spread of a magazine, annotating more features needed for my own double page
spread that I would create.
